Coaching Tip

A very powerful approach to use when working with others, no matter the situation, is to treat them as you would want them to treat you. You will find that working with others from this mindset creates goodwill, which allows the parties involved to collaborate on the best solution possible.

Business Times Column #2

Are You IN, or Are You OUT?

In my last column, I laid out the differences between thriving, surviving and drowning. As long as you were honest with yourself, you were able to identify which of these realities you are currently experiencing, in your career or business, and life. With your new clarity, you can begin to make changes in your perspective, and take actions, that will deliver to you the reality you desire.

The first and most powerful question to answer is: Are you IN, or are you OUT? Your answer to this critical question--and committing to it fully--will determine your direction, and direction is what you need to move from drowning or surviving to thriving. Without direction we are lost.

If you have identified that you are drowning, and you truly believe that your career or business is not at all what you want it to be, then creating an exit strategy may be right for you. As you begin to plan for your change of direction, choose to be grateful for things in your life, like the fact you are alive, that you have a career or business to go to, for the abilities you have to do your work, that you will eat tonight and sleep in a bed. Being grateful is a powerful choice you can make to radically alter your perspective of your situation. It is impossible to be miserable when you are truly grateful. Then, commit to do your absolute best until you move on professionally. By doing your best, you will act with integrity, and you will feel better about yourself and your life. You may even find that once you take on a more positive perspective and re-engage, that you are no longer drowning; you may find that you actually like your career or business as you become happier and more successful.

As a person who is surviving, it is wise to take the same actions listed above. Perhaps a change in your career or business is right for you also. Perhaps it is not. Only you can decide this. With gratitude and integrity as your guide, look for a solution to your particular situation. Perhaps you can work with your company to create an adjustment to your position, one that will allow you do more of the work you enjoy and excel at. If you are the owner of a business and there are tasks you do not enjoy doing, look for ways to outsource these tasks to qualified people within, or outside of, your company. This will free you to actually be the one leading your company, to be the innovator you are, and to devote precious time to the growth and development of your organization. As a solution is created you will naturally move toward thriving, and thrive you can!

If you are already thriving, there is even more available to you. It may be that you are so passionate about your career or business, that some of your relationships are not what they can be. You may also be sacrificing some activities that you enjoy very much to follow your passion. In other words, there may be an imbalance between your personal and professional life as you give so much to your career or business. If this is your situation, making conscious choices will allow you to re-engage other areas of your life where great joy, satisfaction and fulfillment can be derived. All work and not enough play can really work against you over time. It is possible to move backwards from thriving, to surviving, and even drowning if one does not remain conscious of their reality and adjust accordingly to continue thriving. So, stay alert for signs of imbalance, and use your conscious awareness to stay on track to greater happiness and success.

It is within each of us to be happy and successful. We have the power to thrive! The difference between those that continue to survive or drown, and those who leave these realities behind is simple. Those who thrive engage their passions, are conscious of their reality, stay aware of their actions and outcomes, are consistently grateful, act from integrity, and have made the decision to be IN. By following this same path, you too can experience exceptional happiness and success in your career or business and life.

Business Times Column #1

Are You Thriving, Surviving or Just Plain Drowning?

In order to answer this question, you must first understand how each of these realities looks and feels. Once this is accomplished, and you have determined your current reality, you can begin the process of moving toward the one you desire.

A key characteristic of people who are thriving is their passion and enthusiasm for their profession, and for life. A person who is thriving in their career or business is one who shows up daily and looks forward to being there. These individuals believe in their product and/or service. They bring their positive energy to the workplace, and are happy to work with their teammates in meeting the needs of clients or customers. A person who is thriving is fun to be around. They care about themselves and others, and are successful. Here, money is not the center of their contentment, yet financial strength is present. People who are thriving are authentically happy people. They are living the life they want to, and are grateful for their life as it is, while still reaching for more. When you are thriving, life is great!

People who are surviving experience an emotional rollercoaster as their passion and enthusiasm comes and goes on a regular basis. These people do not completely believe in the product or service they represent. Their success is limited because they do not positively impact their work environment, and the clients or customers they work with, on a consistent basis. Individuals who are surviving are not authentically happy people. They tend to be more self-centered and are not always fun to be around. Typically, there is a lack of clarity in these people as to what they really want in life, both personally and professionally. They may be in their particular career or business because it’s what their parents or someone else wanted them to do, or they may believe that they are trapped by finances. At a place of merely surviving, people lack gratitude for their very life, and are not being true to their passions. For a person who is surviving, life is just okay.

When it comes to individuals who are drowning in their career or profession, there is a great avoidance to even coming to the workplace. Passion, enthusiasm and positive energy are rarely, if ever, there. They do not look forward to working with teammates, clients or customers. The sheer thought of answering the phone is displeasing. These people struggle greatly to be successful in their position because their heart and mind are just not in it. They simply don’t want to be there. They are focused almost solely on their problems, care very little about others, do not believe in the product or service--or themselves--and are rarely, if ever, happy. Gratitude for their life is absent, they feel lost without any clarity about what would be pleasing work for them, and it shows. Clients or customers are turned off, and teammates avoid them. Due to their lack of professional success, finances are a struggle, as is a positive attitude. When you are drowning, life stinks!

With this information, it is now possible to become clear as to which reality you are currently experiencing. Did you see yourself in these examples? As a business owner, where do you see your current team members? Clarity and truth are two of the most powerful tools you have in the creation of a personal and professional life that is both pleasing and fulfilling. The power here lies in not denying your current reality, no matter what it is.

The way to move from drowning or surviving to thriving, is to accept the truth of your particular situation. From this point, you can begin to take action to enhance your reality so that you can stop suffering and start truly living. Even if you find that you are already thriving, there are powerful steps you can take to thrive to an even greater degree.

In my next column, I will lay out options you can implement NOW to move from the reality you are currently experiencing into the one you really want, one that enhances your life, rather than depleting it.
